Facebook video with no sound: how to fix it

Facebook sometimes stores picture and sound separately. The highest quality option joins them.

Downloading a video only to find it's silent is frustrating. Most of the time the cause is technical and the fix is simple: Facebook stores many videos in two parts, one with just the picture and one with just the sound. Download sites that only hand over the picture part produce silent videos.

On ClipsKeep, the highest quality option joins both parts on the server before sending you the file. The steps below cover that case and the other possible causes.

1. Download it again with the first option

Paste the link again and pick the first option in the list, the highest quality one, highlighted in yellow. When a video has separate sound, that's the option where the server joins the two. That's also why the download may take a few extra seconds to start.

2. Check the volume and silent mode

It sounds obvious, but it happens a lot. Turn up your phone's media volume while the video is playing, not the ringer volume. On iPhone, also check that Bluetooth headphones aren't connected somewhere else.

3. Make sure the original video has sound

Open the video on Facebook and check it has audio there. Some videos are posted without sound, with captions only. In others, Facebook removes the music for copyright reasons and shows a notice that the audio isn't available. In those cases the downloaded file has no sound either, because there's no sound to download.

4. Try another player

If the video has sound on Facebook and is still silent after step 1, open the file in a different player, such as VLC. Some older players don't recognise the audio track in certain MP4 files.

The audio is out of sync with the picture. Why?

It can happen with very long videos or when the original broadcast had problems. Try the SD version, which comes as a single file with audio and picture together from the start.

Does joining the audio lower the video quality?

No. The server only puts the existing picture and sound into one file; it doesn't re-encode the picture, so you get the same quality Facebook stores.
